Dallas Zoo among the nation’s Top 10
May 23, 2014

Public vote earns No. 9 spot among 20 finalists in USA Today’s 10Best rankings

The Dallas Zoo has been named one of the Top 10 zoos in the U.S. by USA Today. The nation’s largest newspaper selected 20 national finalists, then enlisted the public’s help in ranking them through an online vote for its 10Best program. The Dallas Zoo tallied enough votes to earn the No. 9 spot.

“This honor shows that the nation, as well as the Dallas-Fort Worth area, has heard the buzz about what we’ve created for our community,” said Gregg Hudson, chief executive officer of the Dallas Zoo. “Our members and guests are visiting in record numbers, then telling friends and family about the experience we offer, including our strong education and conservation efforts. The USA Today 10Best list showcases many great zoos, and we’re honored to be among the Top 10.”

The 20 finalists included just two Texas zoos; Houston Zoo finished at No. 7. To choose its 20 finalists, USA Today editors pored over data provided by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The criteria used included contributions to conservation efforts, annual attendance, total acreage, admission fees, number of supporting members and recent awards won. The results can be found at

The Dallas Zoo is the largest zoo in Texas, sitting on 106 acres. The zoo has made major progress in recent years, with new exhibits such as the Giants of the Savannah, a one-of-a-kind habitat that made headlines last year for being the first in the country to successfully integrate elephants alongside giraffes, zebras, ostriches and impalas. The zoo has experienced surging attendance for four years and is on pace for another record-breaking year.

The 10Best Readers’ Choice Award contest nominees are chosen by editors from USA TODAY and and relevant expert contributors. This provides users with original, unbiased, and experiential travel content of top attractions, things to see and do, and restaurants for top destinations in the U.S. and around the world. The core of the site’s uniqueness is its team of local, well-traveled and well-educated travel experts. In 2012, averaged more than 700,000 monthly unique visitors generating approximately 28 million page views.
