Popular cheetah Winspear and his Labrador retriever best friend, Amani, are the stars of our new Cheetah Encounter in ZooNorth. The animal ambassadors demonstrate their ability to use speed as a natural adaptation for survival. The Cheetah Encounter is equipped with a radar gun and several speed screens to show guests how fast the pair can travel as they chase a lure through the 75-yard-long exhibit.
Speed is a critical factor for many animals, allowing predators to catch food and prey to escape. In the wild, cheetahs can run up to 70 mph, making them the fastest land mammals in the world. During the Cheetah Encounter, other animals also show off their natural maneuverability, including African guineafowl, a trumpeter hornbill and others.
The Cheetah Encounter is located near the Pierre A. Fontaine Herpetarium, Picnic Ridge, and the T-Rex Express mini train. Presentations last approximately 20 minutes.
