Dallas Zoo has busiest July in its 125-year history
Aug 1, 2013

For the second straight month, the Dallas Zoo has set a monthly attendance record, with 119,368 visitors in July.

The total smashed the previous July record of 114,544 by nearly 5,000 visitors, and marked the fourth-busiest month ever in the Zoo’s 125-year history.

“This was certainly a month we’ll remember,” said Sean Greene, vice president of guest experiences. “It really validates the hard work our staff and volunteers have put into making the Zoo such a fun place to visit.”

Zoo officials credit the increase to several key factors:

-          The new Safari Nights evening concerts were extremely popular, with more than 2,000 visitors each week relaxing to live music from singer/songwriter Sara Hickman, The Killdares  and popular tribute bands such as A Hard Night’s Day and Satisfaction.

-          Guests continue to flock to see the mixed-species Giants of the Savanna exhibit, in which the Zoo became the first in the U.S. to successfully combine elephants and giraffes in the same habitat.

-          The Dollar Day promotion on July 18, in which the Zoo partnered with MetroPCS to offer $1 admission, hot dogs, ice cream and water, drew 32,212 guests, the second-highest ever for that event.

“We’ve been willing to try new concepts, whether it’s later hours and music during our Safari Nights, or becoming the first Zoo in North America to mix elephants and giraffes,” Greene said. “It’s created unique opportunities for both animals and guests. The response has been fantastic, and we’re already thinking about how we can improve for next year.”

The Savanna species mixing usually occurs on Friday and Sunday, although those days may change due to factors such as weather or animal care. For those interested in seeing this groundbreaking exhibit, it’s best to call ahead to check the schedule. Details also are posted often on the Zoo’s web site, Facebook and Twitter pages.

The Dallas Zoo was recently awarded a Certificate of Excellence as one of the world’s best businesses by TripAdvisor, the largest travel reviewing and planning web site.
