The Animal Outreach Department is responsible for training and presenting wildlife programming to the community including local schools, churches, civic groups, and community events. It also serves as an animal resource for various Zoo activities, both on and off site, including Education Department programs, media appearances, and Special Event functions. Encourages and facilitates a strong team, work ethic and positive attitude in the work environment at all times. The Outreach Specialist I will work with a team of trainers to ensure that animals are utilized safely and appropriately to provide fun and engaging wildlife presentations that convey the Dallas Zoo’s Mission of Conserving Wildlife and Inspiring a Passion for Nature.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Helping to develop and present wildlife programs that engage and inspire audiences through fun, exciting, and safe animal encounters that promote the mission of the Dallas Zoo.
- Understanding and applying operant conditioning and primarily positive reinforcement strategies to train and maintain husbandry and show behaviors.
- Daily oversight for wildlife housed at the Animal Outreach facility. Duties will include animal husbandry, socialization, enrichment, and training of a diverse collection of mammals, birds, and reptiles.
- Record-keeping and scheduling for animal husbandry, training, enrichment, program usage, and various zoo operations.
- Ensuring building maintenance and appearance of the Animal Outreach facility as this area will also be utilized for behind the scenes tours.
- Effective communication and interface with animal health, nutrition, and various zoo departments.
- Understand and uphold Zoo policies and protocols to ensure safe, efficient operations and positive guest experiences.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences (biology, zoology, psychology, etc.) or relevant experience. Up to one year of experience caring for and/or handling animals strongly preferred.
- Public presentation and animal training experience strongly desired, with the ability to present to both small and large crowds.
- Candidate must possess excellent organizational skills, impeccable time management, and the ability to function in a dynamic, team-oriented environment to succeed in this position.
- Must be able to work as part of a team and independently to achieve positive results.
- Must be able to perform the physical challenges involved in the daily duties of the department including talking for long periods, walking throughout the park, lifting/carrying equipment weighing approximately 50 lbs, sitting, kneeling, stooping, crawling, twisting, reaching above head, pulling, bending, and climbing stairs and ladders. Candidate must be able and willing to perform all above duties outdoors and in all weather conditions.
- Must be able to work weekends, holidays and some evenings.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills required.
- Working use of Microsoft based office programs (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Fluency in both English and Spanish languages desired but not mandatory.
- Valid Class “C” driver’s license required to operate Outreach vehicles and reliable transportation.
