Dallas Zoo Introduces Special Shutterbug Programs Including Photo Days, Photo Safaris, and Private Photo Tours
Apr 14, 2011

Feathers, Fur & Scales Photo Contest Has New Deadline of June 30

Shutterbugs have much more to explore at the Dallas Zoo with the introduction of new programs for photography enthusiasts. In addition to Photo Safaris and the annual Feathers, Fur & Scales photo contest, the Zoo now offers Photo Days and Private Photo Safaris. The expanded program schedule offers new opportunities to many guests who enjoy animal photography.

“Through the years, I’ve had amazing opportunities to photograph wildlife at the Dallas Zoo and I love to share my experiences and advice with others who like to take pictures of animals,” said Cathy Burkey, staff photographer at the Dallas Zoo and the Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park for 11 years, and an adjunct professor of photography at Mountain View College. “The only thing you can count on to take a great photo is light. Getting a great image takes patience, perseverance, and a sense of humor.”

Photo Days
Rise and shine with the animals when the Zoo opens two hours early for photographers who want to explore the park at their own pace. Enjoy the peace in the park before guests begin to arrive at 9 a.m. Photo Days begin at 7 a.m. and include a continental breakfast.

Dates: May 14, July 23, and Sept. 24
Cost: $40 (DZS members)/$50 (non-members)

Photo Safaris
You don’t have to travel around the world to photograph wildlife in natural settings. Take a guided tour with Burkey as she leads participants to animal habitats that offer the best opportunities for photographers. Zookeepers will be on hand to help to encourage the animals to be in the best possible locations for photography. Photo Safaris are limited to 15 participants and pre-registration is required. The four-hour adventure begins at 8 a.m. and ends at noon. A continental breakfast is included. Pre-registration is required.

Dates: May 28 and Oct. 15
Cost: $45 (DZS members)/$55 (non-members)

A special Photo Safari and Fossil Rim Adventure is offered on June 25. The two-day program is a joint effort between the Dallas Zoo and the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center at Glen Rose, Texas. The event begins with a Photo Safari at the Dallas Zoo on Saturday morning, then guests travel to Fossil Rim for an overnight stay and a Photo Safari the next morning. All meals and accommodations are included. Rates are based on double occupancy rooms. Transportation between the Dallas Zoo and Fossil Rim is not included. The deadline to register is June 1.

Date: June 25-26
Cost: $425

Private Photo Safaris
The perfect gift for any photographer — private photo safaris are tailored to the individual interests of each participant. Burkey offers one-on-one guidance for finding the best opportunities to photograph their favorite animals. Cost for the four-hour program includes a continental breakfast and a hand-made souvenir booklet of their experience.

Dates: April – June, October – November
Cost: $160 (DZS members)/$175 (non-members)

Top Photographer Summer Camp for Young Shutterbugs
Children, who love photography and are entering 6th to 8th grades in the fall, may be interested in a special camp on July 25-29 and August 1-5 hosted by Burkey. “Top Photographer” teaches kids about wildlife photography. Groups work in a fun, reality-television style competition to create an African Animal Photo Safari Journal to be published on the Dallas Zoo’s website. The week-long camp features a staff-supervised sleepover on Thursday night. Students will be given dinner and then breakfast the following morning. Participants must bring their own digital cameras for this camp! Registration is through the Zoo’s education website at DallasZooEd.com. For more information, call (469) 554-7300.

Cost is $239 (DZS members)/$265 (non-members).

Feathers, Fur & Scales Photo Contest
The Feathers, Fur & Scales photo contest is open to everyone from children to experienced professionals. The entry fee of $15 enables participants to submit up to three 8×10 prints of any animal from the Dallas Zoo. All photos must be taken between March 1 and June 30, 2011. Prints may be color or black-and-white and should be unframed and unmounted.

Photos will be judged in three categories: children (12 and under); junior (ages 13 to 18 years); novice (beginners to non-professionals); and advanced (considerable photographic experience to professionals). First, second, and third place winners will be selected in each category and best of show will be awarded. Three honorable mentions in each category also will be awarded.
