RADIO DISNEY DAY: featuring Jessica Sanchez

Jessica Sanchez, the popular, big-voiced teenager who was the runner-up to Phillip Phillips in Season 11 of “American Idol,” will perform a free concert at the Dallas Zoo on Saturday, April 5.

Sanchez is headlining this year’s Radio Disney Day at the Zoo, hosted by Radio Disney Dallas, where she’ll perform her hit single “Tonight” and songs from her new album.

The appearance is one of just seven national stops on the live-event tour, “On The Road to the RDMAs,” an innovative tour that gives kids the opportunity to see live performances by top Radio Disney artists. “On the Road to the RDMAs” precedes the 2014 Radio Disney Music Awards, which will be held April 26 at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles.

Along with the concert, Zoo guests will have the chance to vote for their favorite artists in all RDMA categories, including “She’s The One – Best Female Artist,” “They’re The One – Best Group” and “So FANTastic – Fiercest Fans,” via an interactive kiosk.

The celebration begins at 2 p.m., when the Radio Disney Dallas Road Crew will treat fans to interactive entertainment, fun games and giveaways and the best songs from today’s biggest artists. Jessica Sanchez will take the stage at 3 p.m., followed by a public meet-and-greet from 4-5 p.m.

Come early and explore the Zoo before the concert, which is free with Zoo admission ($15 for ages 12-64; $12 for ages 3-11 and seniors; and children under age 2 and DZS members are free). Parking is $8 per vehicle, or take the DART Red Line straight to the Zoo entrance to avoid traffic.

The road tour kicked off in Orlando and will stop in Chicago, Houston, Cleveland, Dallas and Seattle before culminating in an award pre-show in front of the Nokia Theatre on April 26. Fans will be able to watch “Disney Channel Presents The Radio Disney Music Awards,” a television special originating from the event on Sunday, April 27 (7 p.m. CDT). More information about each event can be found at www.Disney.com/RDMA.

Start: April 5, 2014 2:00 pm
End: April 5, 2014 5:00 pm
Cost: FREE with general Zoo admission

SPRING BREAK 2014

Flowers aren’t the only things blooming right now – so are new amenities. In just a few hours, you can travel around the world and meet some of the wildest residents in Dallas. Check out one of the many shows and exhibits offered at the Zoo, including the award-winning Giants of the Savanna, live Wild Encounters stage presentations, the SOAR: A Festival of Flight bird show, or zookeeper encounters.

Spend the day investigating your very own animal kingdom. Meet the new chimpanzee baby, take a trek on the Monorail Safari, feed the lorikeets, view the creepy-crawlies in Bug U!, or catch the new giant anteaters in ZooNorth.

Other highlights:

  • Giants of the Savanna: Zookeepers have been mixing it up on the savanna all winter. Look for elephants alongside giraffes, impalas, ostriches, guineafowl and zebras.
  • Showtime: Grab your camera and free ticket to SOAR: A Festival of Flight at the Wildlife Amphitheater in ZooNorth. And over in the Wilds of Africa, make sure to stop by the Wild Encounters Stage to experience live animal presentations every half-hour.
  • Expanded Keeper Encounters schedule: Once the kids are released from school and into the wild, they can still learn about wildlife from the zookeepers that care for our animals every day. (Encounter times found on Zoo map).
  • Baby chimpanzee: Born Jan. 26, the baby is the second for mother Ramona. Guests may see Ramona carrying the baby in the Kimberly-Clark Chimpanzee Forest (weather permitting) until it begins to start moving on its own.
  • Spring Break camps: Little animal lovers will love Nature’s Superheroes spring break camp, available for one day or the entire week. Visit dallaszoo.com/education/camps-classes/spring-camp/ for information or to register.
  • Food: Cool down spring fever with a frozen treat at the new Sweet Treats stand, which offers gourmet ice cream, cotton candy and more. At lunchtime, find everything from soups and salads to burgers and pizza at three restaurants.
  • Gifts and rentals: Shop ’til you drop at the Zoofari Market, where purchases from a wide selection of unique gifts and souvenirs help support the Zoo. Strollers and wheelchairs can be rented there, as well, but are subject to availability.
  • Rides and attractions: Other adventures include the Safari Express mini train, $2; giraffe feeding, $5; Endangered Species Carousel, $2; Monorail Safari, $3; and pony rides, $2 (must weigh less than 80 pounds).
