Classroom Program

We offer a variety of TEKS-aligned classroom programs to enhance your curriculum and inspire animal lovers of all ages!  All of our classroom programs are led by Dallas Zoo instructors and held in one of our many Zoo classrooms.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


Zippity Zoo:  Texas  or  Zippity Zoo: Savanna
Grades:  PreK – Kinder
Length:  30 minutes

Get your students excited about animals!  Interactive programs are themed and include an engaging story, activity and live education animal. This Preschool through Kindergarten program introduces students to reading and animal natural history.  Programs are aligned to Texas Preschool Guidelines and Kindergarten TEKS. Choose from the program themes: Zippity Zoo Savanna or Zippity Zoo Texas.

Cost:  $170/program (1- 20 students). $8.50/ additional student (max 30 students per program). Price includes Zoo admission. You receive 1 free adult per 10 students. Additional adults are $5 each.


Close-ups:  Animal Classification
Grades: K – 1st
Length:  45 minutes

Students will engage in an inquiry based program to differentiate between living and non living as well as classify animals into different groups (mammals, reptiles, etc).  A few live animals will visit the class to help students understand how their physical characteristics classify animals.

Cost:  $180/program (1- 20 students). $9.00/ additional student (max 30 students per program). Price includes Zoo admission. You receive 1 free adult per 10 students. Additional adults are $5 each.


Close-ups:  Animal Adaptations
Grades:  K-5th
Length:  45 minutes

How do animals survive in the environment?  They adapt!  Explore how body coverings, body parts and behaviors help an animal survive.  Compare and contrast physical characteristics of different animals with help from a few live animals in the classroom.

Cost:  $180/program (1- 20 students). $9.00/ additional student (max 30 students per program). Price includes Zoo admission. You receive 1 free adult per 10 students. Additional adults are $5 each.

Grades:  K-3rd
Length: 45 minutes

Bring predators and prey to life!  Discover how energy is transferred in food chains and food webs.  Through hands on activities and live animals, students learn how animals are connected and depend upon each other and their environments to survive.

Cost:  $180/program (1- 20 students). $9.00/ additional student (max 30 students per program). Price includes Zoo admission. You receive 1 free adult per 10 students. Additional adults are $5 each.

Grades:  4th – 5th
Length:  45 minutes

Wild Jobs at the Zoo
Grades:  2nd – 12th
Length:  45 minutes

Find your career at a zoo!  Zoos offer several career choices such as zookeeper, animal curator, accountant, exotic animal veterinarian and so much more!  This interactive program opens students eyes to the diversity of careers associated with a zoo and how to prepare for them.  The Wild Jobs program includes at least one live education animal.

Cost:  $180/program (1- 20 students). $9.00/ additional student (max 30 students per program). Price includes Zoo admission. You receive 1 free adult per 10 students. Additional adults are $5 each.


General Scheduling Information

What groups are eligible for the education admission rate?

Eligible groups include: preschools, state licensed daycares, public or private schools, homeschool groups, scouts, shelters, City of Dallas recreation centers, YMCA/YWCA, Boys/Girls Clubs, and organized college classes (where a teacher is bringing the students for a class project).

What groups are NOT eligible for the education admission rate?

Ineligible non-education groups include churches, corporations, senior citizens, Mother’s Day out, family groups, birthdays, travel companies, non City of Dallas recreation centers, non-profits, college trips (not led by teacher), etc.

To schedule a field trip or program, you must submit a reservation form at least two (2) weeks in advance of the requested date. Programs can be scheduled Monday-Friday between 9:30 AM – 3:00 PM.  Your field trip or program is confirmed when you receive a confirmation letter from us which includes a reservation number.  Field trip reservations cannot be accepted on special event days (i.e Dollar Day, Homeschool Day).  Please note that April and May are high volume school group months.  Please plan travel and entrance times accordingly. Guided tours and classroom programs cannot be scheduled during our Summer Camp season (June thru August) due to staffing limitations.

Field trips that include a program must be paid in full, for the total number of students requested, at least one (1) week prior to the scheduled date.  Self-guided field trips may be paid in full prior to the scheduled date or on the day of the visit.

 

Cancellation/Reschedule Policy

Your reservation may be rescheduled once without penalty.  Reschedule dates should be at least two (2) weeks in advance.  Additional reschedules will be charged $25 per instance.  Cancellations must be received in writing at least one (1) week prior to the date of your visit.  Refunds will not be issued for any amount under $20, for cancellations made within one (1) week of the scheduled date, or for no-show groups.  Your school (and/or Big Thought/ArtsPartners if using AP funding) will be invoiced for the total reservation cost if you fail to show for your field trip/program or cancel within one (1) week of the scheduled date.

The Dallas Zoo and Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park are open rain or shine.  Field trips and programs will be cancelled if DISD is closed due to inclement weather.  Please contact Education Reservations (469-554-7300 or Education@DallasZoo.com ) as soon as possible if cancelling or rescheduling due to severe or inclement weather.  Rescheduling fees due to DISD closure will be waived.  Reschedule dates should be at least two (2) weeks in advance.

We will do our best to accommodate late arrivals, but we reserve the right to cancel or adjust programs as needed.  The Dallas Zoo and Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park reserves the right to change these policies without notice.

Dallas ISD ArtsPartners Funding - Your voucher number and approval amount must be included on the reservation form.  ArtsPartners funding will not be applied retroactively to existing reservations.  Please be aware that any ArtsPartners reservation made prematurely will be cancelled and a new reservation form must be submitted with voucher approval codes and with a date at least two weeks in advance. 

 

Code of Conduct

Teachers and chaperones will be held responsible for student conduct. Any behavior that endangers the safety of our animals, staff or other visitors will result in your group being expelled from our facility.

  • DO have students wear nametags that include their name, school, and teacher’s name (no safety pins)
  • DO stay with their assigned chaperones at all times.
  • DO understand that animals, like us, need rest and privacy.  If an animal is not visible, check back later.
  • DO pick up your trash. Please dispose of garbage in trash or recycling bins.
  • DO stay on pathways.
  • DO walk, not run.
  • DO use quiet voices.
  • DO be patient and look all around the exhibit. Animals are adapted to blend in with their surroundings. They may be resting nearby.
  • DON’T feed animals. They are on a carefully balanced diet.
  • DON’T climb on rocks, walls, or fences.
  • DON’T deface Zoo or Aquarium property.
  • DON’T pick plants or flowers.
  • DON’T tap on exhibit glass, scream, spit and/or throw objects of any kind into exhibits. This behavior is disrespectful and will not be tolerated.
