The Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park Celebrates New Beginning for 75th Anniversary

Everything old is new again. The Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park, which officially opened in December 2010, is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the historic building at Fair Park. Extensively remodeled to meet the interests of children today, the Children’s Aquarium provides kids with the opportunity to see the “greatest hits” of the sea — sharks, jellyfish, eels, rays, piranhas, turtles, clown fish, and other species from popular movies and books. The child-friendly design offers interactive exhibits for hands-on exploration, with a Coastal touch pool filled with horseshoe crabs, hermit crabs, lobsters, and other creatures. Venture to the outdoor pavilion to visit Stingray Bay, where guests can feed and interact with cownose rays in a touch pool. Nearby, they can watch huge stingrays and zebra, bonnethead, and other sharks swimming in a 50,000-gallon tank.

“We’ve had a tremendous response to the Children’s Aquarium,” said Gregg Hudson, executive director of the Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park and the Dallas Zoo. “Attendance has increased by more than 50 percent since the facility was redesigned. Kids love the personal experiences with sea creatures, and parents find that the smaller size and affordable admission price meet the needs of young children with shorter attention spans.”

The Aquarium offers daily feeding demonstrations at 2:30 p.m. Visitors can feed cownose stingrays daily. The public feeding schedule is:

  • Sundays: Sharks at Stingray Bay
  • Mondays: Moray eel and spiny lobsters at the Nearshore Gallery
  • Tuesdays: American alligators and alligator snapping turtle at the Freshwater Gallery
  • Wednesdays: Sharks at Stingray Bay
  • Thursdays: Sea turtle at the Shore Gallery
  • Fridays: Sharks at Stingray Bay
  • Saturdays: Piranhas at the Freshwater Gallery

Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for children 3 to 11, and free for children age 2 and younger. The Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park will be open from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. during the State Fair of Texas. (Visitors arriving before 6:30 p.m. may remain until 7 p.m.) The Aquarium is located at 1462 First Ave. in the shadow of the Texas Star Ferris wheel.
