PROFILE:
Scimitar-horned oryxes, which formerly inhabited the whole of North Africa, are now classified as extinct in the wild by the IUCN, due primarily to hunting. Thankfully, there is a large population in captivity and reintroductions into their wild ranges are under way, with further releases planned.
