SCIENTIFIC NAME:
Pelecanus occidentalis
PROFILE:

Brown pelicans are especially good at paddling due to their totipalmate foot (meaning all four toes are connected by webbing). Life in the wild can be quite challenging for injured animals. Rehabilitated birds that are not able to be released into the wild are able to live their lives in the safe, enriching environment at the Zoo.

North and South America; coastal; native to Texas
IUCN CONSERVATION STATUS:
Least concern, but listed as a state endangered species in Texas

Piscivore (fish eater); also known to scavenge
